At Chiesi the scale changes again: from the product system to the organisation system, and how 21 affiliates measure what patients actually experience.
The FDA aligns its quality rules with ISO 13485, and AI reaches regulated products faster than the rules written for it.

Development
At Flex, everything I had built met in one place: engineering, form, market and people, applied to medical devices, with a global team of 12 designers and the Human Factors work I directed.
I joined the year IEC 62366-1 was published. Within six years came the FDA’s final human factors guidance and the MDR: Human Factors evidence moved to the centre of submissions, and design had to help produce it. Then COVID pushed care, and devices, into the home, where a watch could already record an ECG cleared by the FDA.

The market, studied: a degree in communication and marketing, design as differentiation. Then building new things: as an intrapreneur inside companies, and alongside the founders of new ventures. At XFORM I helped a small studio look further: work across clients, an office in China. At frog, research, strategy, design, UX and engineering worked as one team. At Industrio Ventures, a start-up accelerator, I advised ten early-stage ventures on design, production, product strategy, methods and project management. All of it came with me into regulated products.
Meanwhile the FDA drafts its human factors guidance (2011) and starts regulating apps on the phone (2013).

From the technical office to car design, after the Master in Milan. At Italdesign Giugiaro I learned lines and surfaces at the highest level, in how they are built and in what they say. Industrial design then put technique and the eye for form to work together. At V12 Design I felt that design needed the market, and began to experiment; between V12 and Beijing I moved from designing to running projects and people.
In 2007 usability enters medical device standards, and the iPhone resets what people expect from a screen. The two lines met later, when the people using a medical device started to expect what their phone had taught them.
